FAQs

1. What is SIP Trunking?
SIP trunking explained: The SIP acronym stands for Session Initiation Protocol, but let’s try and cover some SIP trunking basics without using a lot of telecom jargon. Here’s a simple SIP definition: SIP Trunking allows business phone systems to use an internet connection instead of a traditional phone line for both toll free numbers and local numbers. Why should you care? Because SIP trunking costs less than traditional phone service, it scales easier, and it offers increased phone service reliability.

2. What are the benefits of SIP trunking?
Once you understand the benefits of switching to a SIP trucking service you’ll want to set up a SIP account as soon as possible – for most businesses, it’s simply a no-brainer.

  • Cut Costs: The first major benefit of SIP trunking is cost. SIP trunking can save your business as much as 60-80% over traditional ISDN phone lines. Why? Because SIP gives you access to phone lines over the Internet, making local calls, mobile calls, long-distance calls, and even international calls much cheaper.
  • Scale Your Business: The second major benefit of SIP trunk services is scalability. SIP trunks are hosted virtually. There’s no physical phone system equipment. No closet full of complex telecom hardware. If you need to set up new numbers (regardless of geographical location) you can do so in seconds. And if your business grows, all the necessary infrastructure is already there to handle any increase in call traffic.
  • Increase Reliability: The third major benefit of SIP is increased phone service reliability. SIP trunking is cloud-based which increases reliability through redundancy. In other words, if there is an outage SIP trunking providers can reroute your services to a backup data line or forward your phone system to mobile phones to keep your business up and running.

3. Which SIP pricing plan is less expensive: Unlimited Minutes or Carrier-Grade?
Carrier-grade pricing is almost always more cost-effective than SIP trucking plans with unlimited minutes. Let’s break down why:

First, unlimited SIP trunking isn’t really unlimited.

Every service provider who offers “unlimited minutes” has what is called a “Fair Use Policy” or “Reasonable Use Policy” buried in their terms and conditions. These policies essentially limit the number of minutes you can use on your “unlimited” plan.

In most cases, these policies exist for legitimate reasons but it would be disingenuous for a SIP provider to not admit that, at a minimum, it obscures the sticker price. And not only does it obscure the actual price you pay, it’s also dangerous.

If you reach your SIP provider’s “Fair Use” limit it could interrupt your phone service. Every service provider’s Fair Use Policy is different, so make sure you read it. You could get shut down without adequate warning.

Second, unlimited plans limit the number of “channels” or “trunks” you can use.

In other words, unlimited plans limit the number of concurrent calls you can receive. One channel or trunk means one call.

So, if you want the ability to receive 20 concurrent calls you’ll need to pay for 20 channels. The kicker is even if you only need the ability to handle 20 concurrent calls some of the time (i.e., during your busy season), you still have to pay for them as part of your plan, all the time, even when you’re not using them.

Therefore, unlimited plans are less cost-effective because you are forced to pay for minutes and channels you don’t use. Not to mention you’re given the false sense of security of thinking you have an “unlimited” plan, which actually has a limit that could interrupt your service.

So you might be thinking…

Why pay for what you don’t use?
Why put your business at risk?
Is there a better way?
The answer is yes. It’s called Carrier-Grade Pricing.

What is carrier-grade pricing?

Carrier-grade pricing is a SIP trunk pricing model that is more straightforward and less expensive than unlimited SIP trunk plans because you only pay for what you use.

How does carrier-grade pricing work?

Carrier-Grade pricing is simple. You only pay for the minutes you use, as you go, and there’s no limit to the number of channels or trunks you get with your plan. So you don’t have to pay your busy season’s phone bill all year long. Carrier-grade pricing is cheaper than unlimited SIP trunking and you don’t have to worry about hitting your “unlimited” plan’s arbitrary “fair use” limit.
